Corn Growers Association tries Joe Camel approach

As I’ve mentioned previously, the Corn Growers Association have started a major PR campaign. Not only is Audrae Erickson posting comments on every blog that talks about High Fructose Corn Syrup (except mine), and having follow-up articles posted on every news article that mentions the stuff. But they have started a TV marketing campaign.

Follow the link to view the videos. If you’ve missed these gems, make sure you don’t try to drink anything during them.

Umm….ok….how about this one:

These ads make me ill.

I’d like to point out one thing here. The first ad has a woman spouting the party line to a man, the second has an African American woman spouting to a white woman. This is classic marketing technique. They are purposefully putting the stronger model in the wrong to show that those who say they care about what they are eating, only do so because they think it’s the right thing to do, vs having the facts. Even if those facts are wrong.

But I’m not concerned about the message. I’m concerned about the visuals.

Watch the ads again. What do you see?

In the first ad I see someone being offered a popsicle. Made with HFCS, water, artificial colors and flavors. No, I would never offer that crap to the people I love. I’m sorry, but even if they had cane syrup for a sweetener, I would still avoid it for the simple reason that there are better choices for frozen treats, for not much more money.

Same thing in the second ad. Forget the fact that there is HFCS in it and look at what she’s giving to a child. How much fruit juice is in that drink? If there is any in there at all, it’s in the under 5% category.

All these ads say, is that it’s ok to fill up on processed foods, and if you avoid processed crap in favor of healthy fruits, veggies and grains, you are some kind of self-righteous health zealot. The fact that these ads are being run during shows aimed at kids is horrific.

They haven’t found their Joe Camel yet, but I would expect a 3D ear of corn to start showing up next.
