Your kids won’t drink milk? Add some sugar!

I ran across this article today on napsnet.com. Kris Clark an assistant professor claims that it’s ok to give your child flavored milk that is sweetened with HFCS.

Hmm…Ok then….

According to the Dr, you only get an average of 60 extra calories from the flavorings. That works out to 4 level tsps of sugar. If that’s only sweet thing they have for lunch that is fine.

But lets add in the rest of an average sack lunch.

1 Honey Roasted Ham sandwich with mustard and ketchup.

  • 1 tsp of sugar for each slice of bread
  • 1 tsp of sugar for every tbsp of ketchup
  • The sugar content of honey roasted ham varies widely from brand to brand.

Personal bag of BBQ chips

  • Yep sugar there too.

1 bag of pre-packaged carrots (some brands add HFCS to keep the carrots looking fresh longer)

3 chocolate chip cookies ‘Chips Ahoy Brand’

  • 2.5 tsp for 3 cookies

Add that all up and you have upwards of 2.5 TABLESPOONS OF SWEETENER.

Now to be completely honest, I have no way of knowing what portion of the sweetners are corn based or real sugar. But almost a third of it would come from changing to a flavored milk. That’s 15 cups of sugar (that’s just under a gallon in volume) and an extra 11k calories over the school year.

Do our kids really need that?

  4. ugh, that makes my stomach hurt just thinking about it! There is added sugar and HFCS everywhere I turn, it’s so frustrating!

  5. What scares me more about the article you linked to than anything is the blatant lies about HFCS. Not only does it fly in the face of all the mounting evidence against HFCS, it is irresponsible and damaging information that they are handing out. I’d love to see you do another article on just this subject.
